Thermador 45-inch cooktop recall 2002 (electric) — BSH Home Appliances Corporation announced a voluntary recall to repair certain 45-inch Thermador brand electric cooktops in April 2002, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Hazard
The recalled 45-inch electric cooktops have a control circuit defect that can cause a heating element to remain energized when the user attempts to switch it off. The unintentional active element poses a fire hazard if items are placed on the cooktop surface believing it to be off.
Affected units
- Brand: Thermador 45-inch electric cooktops (Professional and Masterpiece series predecessors)
- Configuration: 45-inch wide drop-in electric cooktops with multiple heating elements
- Sold at: authorized Thermador dealers and appliance retailers nationwide
How to identify
Model and serial numbers are located on a label visible under the cooktop after removing the unit from the countertop opening, or on the original installation paperwork. Owners of any 45-inch Thermador electric cooktop should verify the model against the BSH recall list.
What to do
- Discontinue use of the cooktop until the recall repair has been completed
- Disconnect electrical power to the cooktop at the breaker if the unit is part of the recall
- Never leave flammable items on the cooktop surface — this is a permanent safety practice regardless of recall status
- Contact BSH Home Appliances at 888-965-5813 to schedule the free in-home repair
Urgency level
High. The defect causes elements to remain energized after being switched off, which is one of the most dangerous failure modes for any electric cooktop and warrants immediate action.
