Thermador induction cooktop pacemaker proximity safety notice — owners of Thermador Masterpiece induction cooktops who have an implanted pacemaker, defibrillator, or other electronically controlled medical device are advised on safe operating distance and electromagnetic field considerations.
Why this matters
Induction cooktops generate a high-frequency electromagnetic field at the surface of the cooking zone in order to induce eddy currents in compatible cookware. The field is strongest at the surface and falls off rapidly with distance, but it can still be detected several inches above the cooktop. Implanted cardiac devices are designed with electromagnetic interference rejection, but proximity to a strong induction field has been the subject of medical guidance from device manufacturers.
Recommended distance
- Most pacemaker manufacturers recommend keeping the implanted device at least 24 inches (60 cm) away from an active induction cooking zone
- Defibrillator manufacturers may recommend a greater distance — consult the device documentation
- The 24-inch guideline applies to the device location, not the user — a person with a chest-implanted pacemaker should not lean directly over an active induction zone
Practical use
- Stand back from the cooktop while the cooking zone is active — at least one full step (24 inches) away from the cooking surface
- Use long-handled utensils to stir food on active zones rather than leaning in close
- Turn the cooking zone off before reaching across the cooktop or working directly above it
- Note that the magnetic field is only present when a compatible pan is on an active zone — an idle cooktop generates no field
If a medical device alarm sounds
If an implanted device alarm activates while near the cooktop, step away immediately and contact the device manufacturer or a cardiologist. Modern pacemakers and defibrillators are extensively shielded and most users have no issue with induction cooktops, but individual device behavior varies.
Consult the device manufacturer
Before installing or using a new induction cooktop, owners with implanted cardiac devices should consult their device manufacturer or cardiologist for specific guidance based on the implanted model. Most device manufacturers publish induction cooktop safety guidance for patients.
