Thermador 48-Inch Pro Gas Range Recall 2002 | CPSC

Thermador Pro gas range recall 2002 — BSH Home Appliances Corporation voluntarily recalled approximately 2,460 Thermador brand 48-inch all-gas Professional Series ranges in September 2002, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, due to a fire hazard.

Hazard

The recalled 48-inch all-gas Professional ranges vent hot air below the small oven cavity, which causes the metal surface on that oven door to reach temperatures hot enough to cause skin burns on contact. This is a burn hazard, not a fire hazard, and is most pronounced during extended high-temperature cooking and oven preheat cycles.

Affected units

  • Brand: Thermador Professional Series 48-inch all-gas ranges (the precursors to the modern Pro Grand line)
  • Total units: approximately 2,460 in the United States
  • Configuration: 48-inch wide stainless steel ranges with small and large side-by-side oven cavities
  • Specific model numbers: PRG484GGUS, PRG486GDUS, PRG486GLUS
  • Sold: March 1998 through November 2001
  • Price range: $5,540 to $6,370

How to identify

Model and serial numbers are located on a metal data plate behind the lower kick panel on the front of the range. Owners of any Thermador 48-inch Professional all-gas range purchased in the early 2000s should verify the model number against the recall list.

What to do

  1. Contact BSH Home Appliances at 888-965-5813 to verify whether the range is part of the recall
  2. Schedule a free in-home repair from an authorized Thermador-certified technician
  3. The range can continue to be used at normal cooking temperatures while waiting for the repair appointment
  4. Avoid extended self-clean and high-temperature broil cycles until the repair has been completed

Urgency level

Medium. The hazard is associated with extended high-temperature cooking. The recall covers a small population of luxury Pro Series gas ranges from the early 2000s.
