Thermador Pro Grand Range Hood Ventilation Safety Notice

Thermador range hood ventilation notice — owners of Thermador Masterpiece, Professional, and Liberty Collection ventilation hoods are advised to perform regular grease filter cleaning and annual ductwork inspection to prevent grease fires, reduced ventilation performance, and motor damage. This is a general safety advisory.

Why this matters

Range hoods over high-output Thermador Pro Grand and Pro Harmony cooking equipment capture grease vapor at much higher rates than hoods over typical home ranges. The grease accumulates first on the baffle filters, then in the ductwork above the hood, and eventually on the blower wheel itself. Heavy grease deposits in ductwork are the leading cause of residential range hood fires reported to fire departments.

Filter cleaning schedule

  • Heavy daily cooking: wash baffle filters in hot soapy water once a week
  • Moderate cooking 3 to 5 times per week: wash baffle filters every 2 weeks
  • Light cooking or occasional use: wash baffle filters once a month
  • Stainless mesh and baffle filters are dishwasher-safe on the top rack — Thermador recommends a degreaser detergent rather than standard dish detergent
  • Allow filters to fully dry before reinstallation to prevent corrosion of the filter retaining clips

Annual ductwork inspection

Once a year, schedule a professional inspection of the ductwork above the hood. The technician will:

  • Remove the hood blower assembly to inspect the discharge transition
  • Inspect the first 6 feet of ductwork for grease accumulation, kinks, or damaged tape seals
  • Clean any visible grease deposits and verify proper exterior cap and damper operation
  • Test blower current draw to verify the motor is not laboring against grease buildup

Warning signs

  • The hood blower runs noticeably louder than when new
  • Visible grease drips on the underside of the hood canopy near the filters
  • Reduced airflow at the highest blower speed setting
  • A grease odor lingering in the kitchen even with the hood running

Special note for Pro Grand hood owners

The 48-inch and 60-inch Thermador Pro Grand range hoods move 1,000 to 1,500 CFM and have correspondingly larger blower motors and ductwork. These hoods require slightly more frequent filter cleaning and more diligent annual inspection due to the higher grease capture volume.
