Thermador Coffee Machine CALC Error: Descaling Required

Thermador coffee machine CALC error indicates descaling required. This is usually a simple issue you can resolve at home with basic troubleshooting. What Does Thermador Coffee Machine CALC Mean? The CALC message on a Thermador Masterpiece built-in coffee machine indicates that limescale from hard water has accumulated inside the heating system and needs to be […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. The machine can continue brewing while the CALC reminder is active, but coffee temperature and quality will be slightly reduced. Run the descaling program within a few days to restore full performance and prevent scale from hardening further inside the heating element.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. CALC clears automatically after the descaling program completes successfully. The machine resets the cycle counter at the end of the descaling process. Do not attempt to dismiss CALC without running the descaling program — the scale buildup remains and the reminder will return immediately.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Machine produces no coffee at all — complete flow blockage from heavy scale, CALC returns within a few days of a completed descaling cycle.

Symptoms You May Notice

CALC or a descaling icon appears on the display

The Thermador TCM24 or BICM24CS machine displays the CALC notification or a corresponding icon on its display after a certain number of brewing cycles in hard water conditions.

Coffee temperature is noticeably cooler than usual

Espresso and coffee beverages are delivered at a lower temperature than expected because scale deposits on the heating element are acting as thermal insulation.

Coffee takes noticeably longer to brew than usual

Each cup takes longer from the time brew starts to when coffee appears in the cup, because the scaled heating element must work harder to reach brewing temperature.

Possible Causes

1

Scale accumulation from hard water supply

Calcium and magnesium minerals in the household water supply have deposited on the heating element and water passages inside the Thermador coffee machine over many brewing cycles.

DIY Possible
2

Descaling interval exceeded in a hard water area

The recommended descaling interval has passed. In areas with very hard water, descaling may need to be performed more frequently than the default reminder interval.

3

Water filter not replaced on schedule

The integrated water filter in TCM24 models that reduces mineral content has not been replaced on schedule, allowing hard water to reach the heating system without treatment.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Run the descaling program immediately

Use only Thermador or BSH-approved descaling solution — never vinegar, which can damage the stainless steel components inside the Thermador TCM24 brewing system. Fill the water tank with the descaling solution mixed with water per the product instructions, then select the descaling program from the machine's menu. The full cycle takes approximately 30 minutes.

Keep the machine plugged in for the full descaling cycle. Interrupting a descaling cycle partway through can leave acidic solution in the water circuit. Complete the full cycle and then run two full water tank rinse cycles before brewing.

  2. 2

Replace the water filter if installed

After completing the descaling cycle, check whether your Thermador TCM24 model uses an integrated water filter cartridge. If so, replace it with a fresh cartridge — a saturated filter allows minerals to bypass filtration and accelerates the next scaling interval.

Thermador recommends replacing the water filter every two to three months in hard water areas. The filter cartridge is accessible through the water tank compartment. Using filtered water in the tank in addition to the cartridge is the best protection against frequent CALC reminders.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • CALC returns within a week of a completed descaling cycle
  • Water flow through the machine is noticeably reduced even after descaling
  • Descaling program does not run to completion — machine stops mid-cycle
