Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. The machine will not brew while FILL is displayed, which is correct behavior. Refilling the tank or freeing the float switch immediately restores function. Do not attempt to force a brew cycle with an empty tank.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. FILL clears automatically as soon as the water tank is filled and properly reseated. No separate reset action is needed. If FILL persists after a confirmed full tank, free the float switch and reseat the tank again.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: FILL persists after multiple attempts with a confirmed full, properly seated tank, Water leaks from the tank connection point on the machine body.
Symptoms You May Notice
Machine displays FILL and refuses to start any brewing program
Attempting to brew espresso, coffee, or a hot water program results in FILL appearing and the machine not delivering any liquid.
Machine displays FILL even though the tank appears to have water
The water tank visibly contains water but the Thermador TCM24 still shows FILL, indicating the float switch inside the tank may be stuck or the tank is not properly seated.
Machine shows FILL immediately after startup
On power-on, FILL appears before any brew attempt, suggesting the machine detected the empty-tank condition during its startup water level check.
Possible Causes
Water tank genuinely empty
The water reservoir has been depleted from previous brewing sessions and needs to be refilled.
DIY PossibleFloat switch stuck in the down position
The float switch inside the water tank — which rises with water level to signal the machine that the tank is full — has stuck in the empty position due to mineral buildup or a debris fragment around the float pivot.
DIY PossibleWater tank not fully seated in its dock
The water tank has been reinserted after filling but not pushed fully into its connection point, so the sensor contact between the tank and the machine body is not made.
DIY PossibleSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Remove, fill, and firmly reinsert the water tank
Pull the water tank fully out of the Thermador TCM24 or BICM24CS machine. Fill it with fresh cold water to the MAX line — do not overfill. Push the tank firmly back into the machine until it seats with a positive stop. If FILL persists, remove and reinsert the tank a second time, pushing it in from a slightly different angle.
Thermador TCM24 water tanks have a float switch that must be vertical to read correctly. If you carry the tank in a tilted position after filling, the float can be tilted and stuck. Shake the tank gently after filling to ensure the float moves freely before reinserting.

2
Free a stuck float switch
With the tank removed and empty, look inside for the float — a small plastic disc or buoy that moves up and down a guide channel. If it is stuck, shake the tank side to side and up and down to free it. Fill with water and verify that the float rises to the top before reinserting.
Mineral scale can accumulate around the float pivot over time, restricting movement. If shaking does not free the float, rinse the inside of the tank with a dilute descaler solution and shake vigorously to dissolve the scale at the pivot point.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- FILL persists with a full tank seated after float switch has been freed
- Water sensor contact in the tank dock shows corrosion or damage
