Thermador Range Hood FAN-NOISE Error: Abnormal Fan Noise

Thermador range hood FAN-NOISE error indicates abnormal fan noise. Review the diagnostic steps below before calling a technician for help. What Does Thermador Range Hood FAN-NOISE Mean? FAN-NOISE describes abnormal sounds from the blower assembly on a Thermador Professional or Masterpiece range hood. Thermador HMWB, HPCN, HMCN, and HSB series hoods use high-efficiency centrifugal blower […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. The hood can be used while the noise is investigated, but a worn motor bearing that goes unaddressed can progress to complete motor failure. Schedule service within a few weeks. Avoid running the fan at high speeds until the source of the noise is identified.

Can I reset the code?

No. Mechanical noise from a blower motor cannot be resolved by a reset. The physical source of the noise — debris, a worn bearing, or an unbalanced impeller — requires hands-on inspection and service.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Fan noise becomes extremely loud or the motor starts smoking, Fan speed drops noticeably alongside the noise.

Symptoms You May Notice

Loud rattling or vibrating noise when the fan runs at any speed

The hood fan produces a pronounced rattle or vibration that was not present when the hood was new, and that seems to get louder at higher fan speeds.

Grinding noise that changes pitch with fan speed

A metallic grinding sound is audible from the blower compartment, and the pitch of the grinding rises and falls in proportion to the fan speed setting.

High-pitched squealing during the first few minutes of fan operation

The blower squeals when first started, then the sound fades as the bearing warms up — a clear indicator of a dry or failing motor bearing.

Possible Causes

1

Debris lodged in the blower wheel

A grease fragment, insect, or piece of packaging has passed through the grease filter and become lodged in the impeller blades, causing a rhythmic rattle proportional to rotation speed.

2

Worn blower motor bearings

The bearings supporting the blower motor shaft have worn or dried out, causing metal-on-metal contact that produces grinding or squealing during operation.

Requires Professional
3

Loose or unbalanced impeller

The impeller (fan wheel) has worked loose on the motor shaft or has accumulated uneven grease deposits that unbalance it, creating vibration at all speeds.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Clean or replace the grease filters

Remove the grease filters and wash them thoroughly. A clogged grease filter restricts airflow through the hood, which causes the blower motor to work harder and can expose the motor to elevated temperatures. After reinstalling clean filters, test the fan to see whether the noise has reduced.

Thermador Professional and Masterpiece stainless steel grease filters are dishwasher-safe. Run them on a high-temperature cycle with a good detergent. Clean filters reduce both noise and motor strain.

  2. 2

Listen for the noise location — above or below the filter plane

With the filters removed and the fan running, listen carefully. Noise that comes from above the filter grille (inside the blower housing) confirms the impeller or motor as the source. Noise that seems to resonate through the ductwork may indicate a loose duct joint rather than a hood component fault.

Check the duct access panel if your Thermador hood has one. A loose duct connection rattles in proportion to airflow and can mimic a motor noise. Tightening the duct joint immediately resolves this type of rattle.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Noise persists after filters are cleaned and duct connections are confirmed tight
  • Motor bearing exhibits roughness or play when shaft is moved by hand with power off
  • Impeller shows grease buildup on only one side indicating balance loss
