Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. The dishwasher is safe to use during E12. Cleaning performance will be reduced until you refill the softener salt and complete a descaling cycle, but there is no damage risk from continuing to run it.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. E12 clears automatically after you refill the water softener salt and run a full cycle or a descaling program. No separate reset action is needed.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: E12 persists after refilling salt and running a descaling cycle, Water flow inside the tub appears noticeably reduced.

Symptoms You May Notice

White chalky deposits visible on the interior walls and racks

A film of white or grey mineral scale coats the stainless steel tub walls, rack tines, and spray arms.

Glassware comes out cloudy even after a full cycle

Wine glasses and other glassware emerge with a persistent cloudy haze that does not wipe off with a dry cloth.

Washing performance gradually declining over weeks

Dishes are less clean than they used to be, with food residue remaining on items that previously came out spotless.

Possible Causes

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Check and refill the water softener salt reservoir

Open the dishwasher and look for the round softener cap on the floor of the tub. Unscrew it and check the salt level. Thermador Sapphire dishwashers hold approximately 1.5 kg of dishwasher salt.

Use only dedicated dishwasher salt — table salt will clog the softener system. Refill and run a regeneration cycle before the next wash.

  2. 2

    Run a descaling cycle

Add a commercial dishwasher descaler to the main detergent compartment and run the hottest, longest available cycle empty. Follow with a rinse-only cycle before loading dishes.

Thermador recommends descaling quarterly in hard water areas. After descaling, E12 typically clears on the next normal cycle.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:
