Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. Running the dishwasher with insufficient water risks overheating the wash pump and running the heating element dry. Resolve the water supply issue before running any cycles.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. After fixing the water supply issue, reset the dishwasher by holding the Start button for three seconds and then starting a new cycle. E18 should not return if water flow is now adequate.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Supply valve is fully open but dishwasher still does not fill normally, Buzzing sound from inlet valve with no water entering at all.

Symptoms You May Notice

Cycle pauses early with very little water visible in the tub

The dishwasher starts a cycle but the water level inside appears unusually low when the door is opened.

Humming from the inlet valve without water flowing

The water inlet valve solenoid buzzes as commanded but little or no water enters the tub.

E18 appears more often during high household water demand

The error tends to appear when other fixtures such as a shower or irrigation system are running simultaneously.

Possible Causes

1

Water supply valve not fully open

The shutoff valve under the kitchen sink has been partially closed, restricting flow to the dishwasher.

DIY Possible
2

Kinked or pinched water supply hose

The dishwasher supply hose has been bent or pinched during installation or furniture rearrangement, reducing flow rate.

DIY Possible
3

Clogged inlet valve screen

The small mesh filter at the water inlet valve connection point has become clogged with sediment or mineral particles.

DIY Possible
4

Failed water inlet valve

The solenoid-operated water inlet valve has partially failed and no longer opens fully when energized.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Verify the water supply valve is fully open

Locate the shutoff valve under the kitchen sink and turn it counterclockwise until it stops. Even a quarter-turn restriction can drop the flow rate below the Thermador minimum.

If the valve has not been moved in years it may be partially closed without anyone noticing. Fully open it and run a test cycle.

  2. 2

Inspect the supply hose and clean the inlet filter

Pull the dishwasher out slightly and trace the water hose from the sink valve to the dishwasher. Straighten any kinks. Turn off the water supply, disconnect the hose at the dishwasher inlet, and use a toothbrush to clean the small mesh screen inside the inlet fitting.

Mineral deposits on the inlet screen are a very common cause of E18 in hard water areas. Cleaning it takes under five minutes.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Inlet valve solenoid energizes but valve does not open
  • Flow rate confirmed adequate at the shutoff valve but restricted at the dishwasher
  • E18 persists after inlet screen cleaning and hose inspection
