Thermador Dishwasher E24 Error: Drainage Problem

Thermador dishwasher E24 error indicates drainage problem. Review the diagnostic steps below before calling a technician for help. What Does Thermador Dishwasher Error Code E24 Mean? The E24 error code on a Thermador Sapphire, Star-Sapphire, or Emerald dishwasher indicates a drainage problem — the dishwasher cannot remove water from the tub at the expected rate. […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. Running cycles with E24 active leaves dirty water in the tub, which recirculates onto dishes and creates sanitation and odor problems. Resolve the drain path issue before running the next cycle.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. After clearing the blockage in the drain path, reset the dishwasher by holding the Start button for three seconds. E24 should not return if drainage is now unobstructed.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: All obvious drain path obstructions have been cleared but E24 persists, Kitchen sink backs up when dishwasher drains.

Symptoms You May Notice

Water pooling at the bottom of the tub after draining

After the drain phase, a visible layer of water remains across the floor of the tub rather than draining completely.

Cycle runs but dirty water does not clear between wash and rinse phases

The rinse cycle runs on top of dirty water because the drain phase failed to remove it, leaving dishes smelling soapy.

Kitchen sink drains slowly at the same time as E24

The dishwasher drain problem coincides with slow drainage at the kitchen sink, suggesting a shared household drain blockage.

Possible Causes

1

Blocked or clogged dishwasher filter

The coarse and fine filter assembly at the tub floor is clogged with food debris and restricting drain pump suction.

DIY Possible
2

Kinked or obstructed drain hose

The dishwasher drain hose has been kinked behind the unit or has accumulated grease deposits that partially block water flow.

DIY Possible
3

Garbage disposal knockout plug not removed

A recently installed garbage disposal still has its dishwasher inlet knockout plug in place, fully blocking the drain path.

DIY Possible
4

Blocked household drain or standpipe

The household sink drain or standpipe that the dishwasher drains into is partially blocked, preventing the pump from emptying the tub against backpressure.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Clean the filter and check the drain hose routing

Remove and clean the filter assembly. Then pull the dishwasher forward enough to trace the drain hose. Ensure it makes a high loop before descending to the drain connection — Thermador requires a high drain loop to prevent back-siphoning. Straighten any kinks.

The drain hose should loop up to at least the underside of the countertop before dropping down to the drain. A low drain hose loop is responsible for about 30% of Thermador E24 calls.

  2. 2

    Check the garbage disposal connection

If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, run the disposal empty before starting the dishwasher to ensure the drain inlet is clear. If the disposal was recently installed, confirm the knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet was removed.

Plumbers occasionally forget to remove the disposal knockout plug. Without removal, the drain path is 100% blocked and E24 will appear on every cycle.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Household drain pipe confirmed blocked and requiring a plumber
  • Drain pump running but unable to push water past the drain connection
  • E24 and E23 appearing together on the same unit
