Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. The oven section can be used for normal baking if E11 only appears when you press Self Clean. If E11 appears during normal cooking, stop using the oven until repaired. Surface Star Burners are not affected.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. A breaker reset can clear E11 if it was caused by a transient sensor glitch or a recently cleared obstruction. If the latch motor or switch has failed, the error returns the next time the control checks the latch position.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: E11 appears during normal bake cycles, Door cannot be locked manually for self-clean.

Symptoms You May Notice

Self-clean cycle refuses to start

Pressing Self Clean produces an immediate E11 instead of activating the door lock.

Oven door lock cycles on and off without latching

You can hear the latch motor running but the door does not actually lock or unlock.

Oven shuts down mid-cycle with E11

A normal bake program is interrupted because the door latch position sensor is sending bad data even during routine cooking.

Possible Causes

1

Failed door latch motor

The small motor that drives the locking pin has burned out or jammed mechanically.

2

Broken door latch position switch

The microswitch that confirms the latch is in the locked or unlocked position has failed, leaving the control board uncertain.

3

Mechanical obstruction in the latch assembly

Food debris, grease, or a foreign object has jammed the latch mechanism above the door opening.

DIY Possible

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Inspect the latch area for debris

Look at the latch hook above the oven door. Use a flashlight to check for grease buildup, food debris, or anything caught in the latch path.

A toothpick or soft brush can clear most debris. Do not use water around the latch motor.

  2. 2

    Manually check door alignment

Open and close the door slowly. Listen for the latch hook engaging cleanly with the door catch. A door that has shifted out of alignment can prevent the latch from completing its travel.

A misaligned door is a common cause of intermittent E11 on older Pro Grand ranges with heavy doors.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Latch motor does not move when commanded
  • Position switch shows the same state regardless of latch position
  • Visible damage or melted plastic in the latch housing
