Thermador Pro Grand griddle cleaning safety notice — owners of Thermador Pro Grand 48-inch and 60-inch ranges with the optional griddle and grill modules are advised on safe cleaning procedure, cooldown timing, and burn prevention. The griddle and grill surfaces retain heat far longer than burner grates and require specific cleaning practices.
Why this matters
The Pro Grand griddle plate is a thick-cast chromium-finished steel surface that reaches 400 to 500 degrees during cooking and retains heat for an hour or more after the heating element is switched off. The grill module reaches similar temperatures. Cleaning these surfaces while still very hot is the leading cause of kitchen burns on Pro Grand ranges, and improper cleaning practices can also damage the chromium surface or scratch the grill grate finish.
Safe cooldown timing
- Light scraping: safe at any temperature with a long-handled metal griddle scraper (the included tool)
- Damp cloth wipe: wait until the griddle surface is below 200 degrees (warm to a hovering hand, not painful)
- Detergent cleaning: wait until the griddle is fully cool (room temperature)
- Removing the griddle plate from the range: wait at least one hour after the last cooking session, and verify the plate is cool to a quick finger touch
Hot griddle cleaning (during cooking)
- Use only the long-handled metal griddle scraper supplied with the range — no other tool
- Push food residue away from the cooking area toward the front grease channel using the flat edge of the scraper
- Keep one hand behind your back during scraping to prevent the natural reaction to brace yourself on the hot surface
- Wear long sleeves and an apron — splattering grease from the scraping action can cause skin burns
- Do not pour water onto the hot griddle — the steam burst is extreme
Grill cleaning
- Allow the grill to cool to warm (below 200 degrees) before any cleaning
- Use a long-handled grill brush with brass bristles — never steel bristles, which can leave fragments embedded in the cooking surface
- Inspect the brush before each use — discard any brush with loose bristles
- Wipe the grill grate with a clean damp cloth after brushing
- Empty the grease drip tray below the grill module after every cooking session — accumulated grease is a fire hazard during the next cook
Deep cleaning (cool griddle and grill)
Once a month, perform a deep cleaning when the griddle and grill are fully cool. Remove the griddle plate from the range (it lifts out of the recess) and wash it in the sink with hot soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge. Dry the plate completely and apply a thin film of cooking oil to the surface before reinstalling — this prevents rust on the chromium finish during humid kitchen conditions.
Burn first aid
For minor griddle burns: cool the affected area under cool running water for 10 to 15 minutes. Cover loosely with a clean cloth. For severe burns, seek medical care immediately. Always have a working fire extinguisher rated for kitchen grease fires nearby when using the griddle and grill.
When to call a technician
If the griddle surface develops cracks, the chromium finish flakes, or the heating element underneath the griddle stops heating evenly, schedule service from a Thermador-certified technician.
