Thermador Sapphire detergent dispenser notice — owners of Thermador Sapphire and Star-Sapphire built-in dishwashers are advised on monthly detergent dispenser cleaning to prevent tablet jams, dispenser door spring failures, and mid-cycle wash performance issues.
Why this matters
Sapphire dishwashers use a spring-loaded dispenser door that releases the detergent at the precise wash phase. Over time, residual detergent powder, dried tablet residue, and rinse aid spills accumulate around the dispenser door pivot and the latch mechanism. This residue eventually causes the dispenser door to stick partially open at the start of a cycle (releasing detergent prematurely) or to fail to open at all (resulting in clean-but-undetergent wash water).
Monthly cleaning procedure
- Open the dishwasher door fully and locate the detergent dispenser on the inner door panel
- Open the dispenser door manually by sliding the release latch — observe whether the door snaps open crisply or hesitates
- Use a soft toothbrush moistened with warm water to scrub away any visible residue around the dispenser door pivot, the latch mechanism, and the inside of the dispenser cup
- Wipe the dispenser cup interior with a damp cloth to remove any caked detergent residue
- Close the dispenser door manually and verify the latch holds it shut
- Wipe the door seal area near the dispenser to remove any drips
Detergent product selection
- Use only dishwasher detergent products approved by Thermador or BSH for European-built dishwashers
- Avoid bargain detergents that produce excessive foam — Sapphire dishwashers are designed for low-foam European-formula detergents
- Cascade Platinum, Finish Quantum, and Thermador-branded detergent are all compatible with Sapphire dispensers
- Tablet-form detergents work in the dispenser but powder and gel forms can sometimes clump in humid conditions — choose tablets for the most reliable dispensing
Warning signs of dispenser failure
- Dishes come out clean but the detergent tablet is still in the dispenser at cycle end
- Detergent residue on the upper rack glassware (dispenser opened too early)
- The dispenser door does not close fully when manually shut
- An audible clicking sound from the dispenser during the wash cycle
When to call a technician
If monthly cleaning does not restore reliable dispenser operation, schedule a Thermador-certified technician — the dispenser door spring or the detergent solenoid may need replacement.
