Thermador Range E9 Error: Cooling Fan Failure

Thermador range E9 error indicates cooling fan failure. Stop using the appliance and call a Thermador-certified technician immediately for diagnosis. What Does Thermador Range Error Code E9 Mean? The E9 error code on a Thermador Pro Grand, Pro Harmony, or Professional Series range indicates the oven cooling fan has stopped or is not being detected […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. Without active cooling, the range cabinet, control board, and gas valves can reach unsafe temperatures. Stop using the oven section until the fan is repaired. Surface Star Burners can still be used briefly for stovetop cooking only.

Can I reset the code?

No. A reset will clear the display but if the fan motor is dead the next oven cycle triggers E9 again within minutes.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: No fan noise after 2 minutes of oven operation, Front panel area becomes too hot to touch.

Symptoms You May Notice

No fan noise during oven operation

Normally a soft whirring is audible from the rear of the range when the oven is hot. With E9, the range is silent.

Control panel and door handle become unusually hot

Without the cooling fan moving air across the range cabinet, the front panel and handle area heat up rapidly.

E9 appears at the same point in every cook cycle

The error consistently triggers a few minutes after the oven reaches setpoint temperature.

Possible Causes

1

Failed cooling fan motor

The brushless DC motor that drives the cooling fan has burned out, often after years of running near high-temperature surfaces.

2

Disconnected fan harness

The harness connector that powers the cooling fan motor has come loose at the control board or at the fan itself.

Requires Professional
3

Air switch sensor failure

A pressure-based air switch confirms the fan is moving air. If this switch fails, the control reports E9 even when the fan is running.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Listen for the fan during preheat

Reset the range at the breaker and start a normal preheat cycle. Stand near the back of the range and listen for the cooling fan to start.

On Thermador Pro Grand ranges the fan starts immediately when the oven turns on, not after a delay.

  2. 2

Check for blockage at the rear vent

Inspect the cooling vent grille at the back top of the range. Make sure no insulation, debris, or wall material is blocking airflow.

Pro Grand ranges installed too close to a back wall can have their cooling intake restricted, causing intermittent E9 codes.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Fan motor does not spin when commanded
  • Air switch shows no continuity when fan is running by hand
  • Visible debris or melted plastic in the cooling fan housing
